My name is Scott and I am a MSN-prepared Registered Nurse (RN) and an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). I have worked in the healthcare community since 2006 and in public safety as a firefighter/EMT since 2005.
I have faced many difficult situations that would make most people extremely uncomfortable or even physically sick to the stomach. I do not share this to boost my own ego. I share this to help healthcare professionals realize they are not alone.
I am acutely aware of the challenges faced by healthcare professionals and first responders. I have first hand experience facing difficult, traumatic, and emotionally charged situations and know that many are forced to FACE THESE SITUATIONS ALONE and it is considered A PART OF THE JOB.
Read that again.
That is unacceptable.
A peer represents every person. In the Bible, we are told that each person is made in the image and likeness of God (Gen 1:27). As such, each person is unique, special, and important. Just because your story and experiences may be different, YOU are still vital and fill a special place in this world.
All It Takes is #1Peer
In the “About Us” page, I describe what and who the Good Samaritan was. Perhaps it is a story with which you are familiar and perhaps not. I encourage you to check it out.
Specifically, I want you to know that it only takes 1 person to make a change. In the story of the Good Samaritan, several passers-by ignored a beaten man on the side of the road who was left to die. #1Peer is all it took to help rescue this man from the grips of death.
All it takes is #1Peer to help smash the stigma of mental health.
All it takes is #1Peer to listen to someone making suicidal statements.
All it takes is #1Peer to provide support to someone in need.
All it takes is #1Peer to demonstrate love and compassion to someone who feels helpless and lost.
All it takes is #1Peer to be present with someone who is grieving.
All it takes is #1Peer to show someone light where all they see is darkness.
All it takes is #1Peer to show the love of Christ to a dark and dying world.
All it takes is #1Peer to begin the process of recovery with a victim of trauma.
All it takes is #1Peer to help prevent the effects of compassion fatigue and burnout.
All it takes is #1Peer.
All It Takes is YOU
All it takes is YOU. Read that again, and again, and again.
There are many who you know who are struggling with a mental illness and are longing for hope where there is none. They have been told to do (XYZ) for their “problem” that isn’t going away. They have heard “I hope it gets better” when it doesn’t. They have sought peace in the noise of life.
Sometimes, all it takes is #1Peer to be present. To be with them. To hear them. To listen.
Are you willing to be the #1Peer to someone else today?
