Your story isn’t over…

In the context of grammar and the modern English language, a semicolon (;) is used to combine two complete sentences that are related to one another. Where a period (.) signifies that two sentences are saying different things, a semicolon is used when two sentences are so closely related that a period would be a great separation. A semicolon indicates that the thought is not over; there is still more to come.

#ProjectSemicolon

Project Semicolon was created to bring more awareness of mental health and suicide to others who may not feel empowered to talk about the topic. They chose the semicolon to represent a “life sentence” in which the author could have ended but chose not to. They promote their mission through tattoo and signage challenges. Some of the tattoos are more prominent while others are more subtle.

Showing Support

Although you don’t have to get a semicolon tattoo to show your support, you can show your support through other means. Perhaps it is speaking out about mental health to those around you. Maybe it is displaying the semicolon through artwork or articles of clothing. Or maybe it is through praying for those suffering with mental illness.

The semicolon symbol represents mental health struggles and the importance of suicide prevention.
